What does Galaxy A9 do?

Galaxy A9 is designed to fit into new born screening test workflow.

Speed, Accuracy and Usability reimagined.

My Role in the project

These are the areas within project that I contributed

  • Led the industrial design of Galaxy A9's enclosure, focusing on workflow efficiency, usability and service separation

  • Defined mechanical interfaces including the dual-door access system, touchscreen positioning and internal lighting zones for imaging systems.

  • Conducted testing and analysis of previous generation plate movement mechanism

  • Worked alongside engineering and product stakeholders to balance design vision with manufacturing constraints

  • Created detailed CAD model of entire instrument and technical drawings including tolerance to ensure accurate and low cost parts.

  • Delivered renders and animation sequences to communicate design intent and machine function effectively

Design Context

New born Screening

Purpose: Early detection of rare but serious health conditions in newborns.

Timing: Performed within 24 to 72 hours after birth.

Conditions Screened: Includes metabolic, hormonal, genetic, and blood disorders (e.g. PKU, congenital hypothyroidism, sickle cell disease).



Design Exploration

The client : BSD robotics has been developing a product platform to enter the field of new born screening.

The pre-existing sample punching equipment posed multiple challenges for user:

  • High risk of repetitive strain injury (RSI) for users.

  • Time consuming process of manually collecting dried blood spot

  • Lack of automation for sample tracking in multi-well plates for new born screen capacity.

  • Difficulty adapting to varied consumables (e.g., plate formats, barcode types).customer needs a 9 plate capacity instrument for efficient new born screening process.


Creating a new hardware product line targeting new born screening.

  • Although the concept and product proposal were established, the prototype required improvements in repeatability, ecosystem compatibility, and mechanical reliability.

  • Limited ease of repair and inconsistent mechanical calibration across units.
